That journey with his field easel once starts at the Reitdiep around Garnwerd, a picturesque village near the city of Groningen, goes via France, Cornwall, Norway (the North Cape), Italy and Spain, and with intervals back to Groningen. Along the way Ben has experienced and painted various types of landscape: often in small series to study the diversity in the various moods. with his characteristic brushwork, his personal signature. Starting at the banks of the Reitdiep, his way of painting is initially still fairly tonal in conception, it gradually changes via the muddy low tide along the Normandy coast, the storms that beat against the Breton rocky coast, the enchanting snow and the biting cold around the North Cape, the Ligurian coasts and the golden colored slopes of Umbria. To alternate, with a strong and balanced palette, Italy with the landscape on the Spanish East Coast, with the always warm afternoon light at his back. Characteristic of his work is the often extreme colour scheme and the warm palette, but chosen in such a way that the painting creates a harmonious impression.
