You see the weather comin
Hendrik Elings is a painter who is a product of the traditional, artisanal and figurative art of painting that is still so deeply rooted in the north of the country. With the necessary ‘Frisian sobriety’ he perceives his surroundings in a completely unique way. Born and raised on the edge of St.-Annaparochie, the village where Rembrandt once said ‘yes’ to Saskia van Uilenburgh. Elings lives and works somewhere in the middle of this area that was reclaimed in 1505, the Bildt. The Wadden landscape, close to the sea wall, is the source of inspiration and the subject for many of his paintings. The endless skies, his curiosity about the horizon, in Elings’ work you see ‘the weather’ coming. He always experiences painting as a small miracle, every time again.
