Painting with needle and thread
After graduating from the Gerrit Rietveld Art Academy in Amsterdam, Annette worked as an independent artist. During trips to Italy and Brazil, she took photographs, often unposed, which became the basis for her artwork. Annette has an eye for the beauty of the ordinary. She captures it with her lens, prints the photo on canvas and embroiders the work to emphasize its beauty. The editing accentuates specific details that are already there and adds something that was not there yet. This approach not only adds physical structure and depth to the otherwise flat surface, but also creates a layered effect that is both figurative and tangible. The embroidery transforms and gives new meaning to the artwork. It is often executed in such a way that it is sometimes difficult to distinguish where thread has been used and where not. This makes it seem as if you are painting with needle and thread. Annette's work is regularly shown at exhibitions and art fairs, including the KunstRAI and the Affordable Art Fair in Amsterdam and Brussels and at the Cobra Museum of Modern Art in Amstelveen. One of her works, entitled “The Pool,” was featured in the Royal Academy of Art’s Summer Exhibition 2023 in London.
