Tweehuysen completed his education at the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU). In Utrecht, after an abstract period, he developed into a figurative visual artist. Since 1999, he has lived on the Frisian Wadden coast on the old sea dike, in the village of Oude Bildtzijl. Recurring themes in the work of René Tweehuysen are: portraits, animals, landscapes, still lifes and all combinations of these. Layer upon layer and in very varied, sometimes subtle, then again broad brushstrokes, René paints with oil paint on panel or canvas. The carrier is first provided with a preparation layer and a colored layer in midtone (imprimatur). He paints an underpainting over the imprimatur. In a subsequent layer, some parts are further elaborated.
Tweehuysen's work is included in many public and private collections. René exhibits regularly at home and abroad. His work was shown in the Royal Society of Portrait Painters exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London, BP Portrait Award Exhibition 2018 at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Finalist in the 14th International ARC Salon and short-listed for Figurativas 2019 MEAM Barcelona.
